Cinema found Gina Kouvara before she had the language for it. Growing up in Greece, film was less a pastime than a way of understanding a world that didn't always have straightforward explanations - a way of sitting with contradiction, with class, with the distance between the life you're given and the one you reach for. That devotion followed her to London, where it found new material: the textures of a city that holds enormous wealth and enormous precarity in the same postcode, the communities that persist in the margins of it, the people who carry entire histories in their bodies without anyone thinking to ask.
Her practice moves across filmmaking, video art and editorial work, rooted in a fine arts education at the University of West Attica and shaped by years of immersion in London's cultural underground. She has worked closely with the Sarabande Foundation, the Lee Alexander McQueen legacy organisation, an environment that deepened her commitment to art as a space where beauty and political urgency are not opposites. Her work has brought her into the orbit of Prettybird, Park Pictures, as well as post-production houses such as Trim editing and Avenues, where she has served as director's assistant, production runner and editor across music video and short film productions, learning the grammar of professional sets from the inside.
In 2025 she directed Riddle for the Straight 8 competition a film shot on a single unedited roll of Super 8, a format that demands total clarity of vision before a single frame is exposed. The film is a dream-state exploration of psychological rupture, produced with a full crew and currently submitted in festivals. Gina’s work is shaped by the formal rigour of Lynne Ramsay, the political tenderness of Lina Wertmüller, and the permission she found watching Derek Jarman make deeply personal cinema without apology.
